Overview
The Steep Corner Fire started on August 10, 2012, at approximately 11:30 AM and is located 25 miles north of Orofino, Idaho. The cause is under investigation. The current size is approximately 310 acres with 70% containment.
A Northern Rockies Type 2 Incident Management Team (IMT) led by Incident Commander, Shawn Pearson, began managing the fire on August 14, 2012. The Incident Command Post (ICP) is located in Headquarters, Idaho at the Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protection Association (C-PTPA) facility. The C-PTPA landing strip is temporarily closed and a temporary flight restriction is listed over the fire area. The IMT is delegated an Initial Attack (IA) responsibility for only C-PTPA fire protection lands covering 41,000 acres, while providing IA support to USFS fire protection lands.
Some firefighters are being staged in ICP for a time this morning for potential IA response needs.
Jurisdiction for the fire is with the Idaho Department of Lands and the Nez Perce/Clearwater National Forest. The C-PTPA is responsible for fire protection in this area.
The fire perimeter has been exceptionally hazardous with the number of hazard trees being encountered requiring assessment and very skilled saw work on steep, inaccessible terrain.
Firefighters have completed all the necessary containment lines and are in various stages of mop-up.
A focus over the next two days will be to secure the containment line on the east flank. The concentration to mop up activities will require heavy saw work, supported with hose lays.
