Default A quiet season so far in AK

ANCHORAGE — Wildfires have burned hundreds of homes in Colorado and New Mexico but the nation's largest state has enjoyed a relatively quiet firefighting season.

As of Wednesday, fewer than 69 square miles, or 44,062 acres, had burned in in 217 wildfires across Alaska, according to the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center in Fairbanks. No one fire has captured the state's attention or even blown smoke from a wilderness area into a major community.

After a small spike in activity in late June/early July, things are very quiet right now in Alaska. This afternoon's News and Notes from the AICC indicates zero new fires and zero carryover/staffed fires.

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner - Alaska's wildfire season limps to a close

FAIRBANKS — August is typically the month when Alaska’s summer wildfire season comes to an end, but in 2012 it looks like that fade-out will be particularly anticlimactic.

Barring an unexpected departure from the Interior’s cool, damp summer, this fire season will go down as the second-smallest of the past dozen years. Only about 200,000 acres have burned in Alaska this summer, with no new wildfires reported in almost a month.
