    Default ASFR? what means it?

I've got two very old CDF records of fallen firefighters

Bixby Mountain Fire, August 1939, Monterey County, 1 fatal, CDF, ASFR Joe Calandra

    and

Williams Hill Fire, July 1943, Monterey County, 2 fatal, USFS, HFEO Edward Gates and CDF, ASFR Paul Nesgis

I recognize HFEO as Heavy Fire Equipment Operator = dozer operator, but I don't know the old CDF ASFR acronym. It would make sense if it was Forest Ranger since one of the articles said a Ranger was believed to have been burned over.

    Thanks for any help!

( ...I'm a bit amazed at how many old dozer burnovers there were...)

Thanks! I should have asked early on before I devoted so much time to trying to figure it out! :D

    Mellie,

    FYI

Original titles were the top man in the county was the Ranger, next level was Associate Ranger then the Assistant Ranger. Later that was changed to Ranger IV down to Ranger I. The titles now are Unit Chief, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief and Battalion Chief.
